A lot has changed since we launched Minimal Phone 2.

Throughout the Kickstarter campaign, we’ve continued refining the hardware, expanding features, and making improvements based on feedback from our community.

Some of those changes were already in motion. Others came directly from the conversations we’ve had with backers.

The result is simple:

The Minimal Phone 2 going into production is even better than the one we originally launched.

Here’s everything that’s changed.

12GB RAM is now standard

Minimal Phone 2 originally launched with 8GB of RAM on our standard configurations.

Our first plan was to upgrade every MP2 to 12GB LPDDR5X RAM if the campaign reached $2 million.

But manufacturing timelines move faster than crowdfunding milestones. We needed to place our chipset order, and rather than wait, we decided to lock in the upgrade early.

Every standard Minimal Phone 2 ordered during the Kickstarter and pre-order period will come with 12GB of RAM.

Once pre-orders end, the standard 256GB model will return to 8GB RAM + 256GB storage, while the 512GB model will remain 12GB RAM + 512GB storage.

So if you want the 12GB + 256GB configuration, this is the window to get it.

3,000mAh became 3,600mAh

Battery life was one of the biggest conversations immediately after launch, so we went back to our mechanical engineering team to see what was possible. We found room for considerably more capacity without making the phone larger.

Minimal Phone 2 now uses a 3,600mAh Advanced Silicon-Anode Lithium-Ion battery, up from the original 3,000mAh design.

Same compact phone.

20% more battery capacity.

The keyboard became touch-capacitive

This was one of our favorite upgrades.

The physical keyboard on Minimal Phone 2 is no longer limited to key presses. It can also detect touch.

That means the keyboard itself can become another way of navigating the phone, allowing interactions without constantly moving your hand between the keyboard and display.

We wanted the physical keyboard to feel like an integral part of the operating system, not something simply attached beneath a touchscreen.

This brings us much closer to that goal.

Five physical keyboard layouts

A physical keyboard is only useful if it works for the person typing on it.

After hearing from customers around the world, we worked with our manufacturing partner to expand the number of physical layouts available at launch.

Minimal Phone 2 will now be available with:

• QWERTY — English
• AZERTY — Français
• QWERTZ — Deutsch
• Dubeolsik — 한국어
• Arabic — العربية

These are physical, laser-etched keyboard layouts, not simply software keyboard settings.

Minimal OS is becoming the heart of MP2

Hardware is only half of what makes Minimal Phone 2 different. During the campaign, we also gave our first deeper looks at Minimal OS, Commands, and Minimal Hub.

Commands is built around a simple idea: do what you picked up your phone to do without wandering through apps first.

Type a command and act directly. A hyphen can create a to-do. An asterisk can create an event. An exclamation point can save a note. A command can initiate a call.

Minimal Hub brings communication together into one place, including messages, email, calls, voicemail, and calendar information, so you can deal with what needs your attention without bouncing between apps.

In September, we released our first full hands-on demonstration of the phone and OS working together.

This is where the philosophy behind Minimal Phone 2 really comes together.

The goal isn’t to make a smartphone incapable.

It’s to make getting things done feel more direct.

Google-certified, with a way out

We also heard from a large group of customers who wanted more control over Google services.

So we decided to support both paths.

Minimal Phone 2 will ship with Google services by default, giving customers access to the Play Store, Google Play Services, banking apps, payments, and the compatibility expected from a modern Android phone.

But you won’t be locked into that configuration.

We will also release an official de-Googled Minimal OS ROM that owners can flash themselves.

Same hardware. Same Minimal OS experience. Google services optional.

We think your hardware should ultimately belong to you.

Accessories are finalized

We’ve now finalized the first set of Minimal Phone 2 accessories. The Kickstarter bundle includes a fitted case along with a three-pack of screen protectors:

Matte. Clear. Privacy.

We’ve also continued refining smaller details on the phone itself. The antenna bands on Pearl and Onyx have been more closely color-matched to their respective finishes so they blend more naturally into the aluminum body.

And this is only the beginning of the accessory lineup.

We have several additional accessories in development that we’ll reveal on our website in the months ahead.

What happens next

On September 21, our team is heading back to China to work directly with our manufacturing partners as we lock in more of the final production details.

We’ll also be getting our hands on the newest Ember samples, giving everyone the first proper real-world look at the Kickstarter-exclusive finish.

Importantly, we’re not starting from zero when we arrive.

Key components and the SoC for Minimal Phone 2 have already been ordered. Production work is already moving behind the scenes.

Built with our community

The biggest takeaway from this campaign isn’t any individual upgrade.

It’s how much the product has evolved through conversation with the people buying it.

A larger battery.

More RAM.

A touch-capacitive keyboard.

More keyboard languages.

More control over Google.

Refinements to the hardware, software, and accessories.

Some of these things were already in development. Others happened because thousands of you asked questions, challenged decisions, and told us what mattered. That’s exactly what we wanted from this campaign.

We launched Kickstarter with one version of Minimal Phone 2.

We’re going into production with a better one.

And we’re not finished yet.

E-paper was a huge part of what made the original Minimal Phone special.

It gave the device a calm, distinct feel. It naturally discouraged endless scrolling, made the screen feel less demanding, and helped us explore a very different relationship with a smartphone.

We still love that about MP01, and we’ll continue supporting it.

But Minimal Phone 2 gave us a chance to rethink what minimalism should mean for the next generation.

And we came to a simple conclusion:

Minimalism was never about the display technology. It was about attention.

E-paper was one way to get there

Our original thinking was that adding a little friction could lead to more intentional behavior.

E-paper helped do that naturally. Everything felt slower and more deliberate, which made it easier to avoid falling into the usual smartphone habits.

For many MP01 owners, that’s exactly what they love about it.

But we also learned that the same friction applied to everything.

It slowed down the things you might want to avoid, but it could also slow down the things you genuinely needed to do. Opening a map. Pulling up a boarding pass. Taking a quick photo. Accessing a banking app. Reading a document.

That made us rethink where the friction should live.

We now believe friction should happen at the point of intention, not at the point of execution.

Your phone should make you think before you open something. But once you’ve decided to do it, the phone should help you get it done.

Minimalism shouldn't be defined for you

This became one of the biggest principles behind Minimal Phone 2.

We don’t want to decide what minimalism means for every person.

For one person, it might mean no social media at all.

For someone else, Instagram might be part of their job.

One person might want their phone almost completely locked down during the week and fully available while traveling.

Those are all valid.

That’s why Minimal OS is built around choice.

Monk Mode

For the times you want the strongest boundaries.

Strip things back, remove the noise, and turn your phone into a much more focused tool.

Focus Mode

The middle ground.

Keep the things you need available while creating more separation from the things that tend to pull you in.

Unrestricted Mode

When you need the full smartphone experience, it’s there.

No fighting the device. No carrying a second phone just because you need an app that day.

That flexibility matters to us.

Minimalism is a dial, not a switch.

Why OLED made sense

Moving to OLED gives us the capability to let those choices happen in software instead of permanently locking them into the hardware.

That doesn’t mean turning Minimal Phone 2 into another traditional smartphone.

Quite the opposite. The screen is still compact. The physical keyboard changes how you interact with the device. Minimal OS is built around intentional navigation, fewer interruptions, and getting where you want to go quickly.

OLED simply means that when you do choose to use something, the display isn’t getting in the way.

There are also things we genuinely like about OLED from a minimal design perspective.

A black interface can disappear into the display. Individual pixels can turn completely off. Information can be shown briefly without making the entire screen feel active.

And without refresh flashes or ghosting, the interface can feel quieter in a different way.

E-paper creates calm through its physical characteristics.

With Minimal Phone 2, we’re creating that calm deliberately through the entire experience.

Less noise, not less capability

This is probably the biggest evolution in how we think about the word “Minimal.”

Minimal doesn’t mean making a phone worse at being a phone.

It means removing what doesn’t need to be there.

Less visual noise.

Fewer interruptions.

No unnecessary surfaces fighting for your attention.

A smaller screen.

A keyboard that encourages writing and communication.

Software that helps you get to what you intended to do without wandering through your phone first.

The goal is not to make your phone incapable.

The goal is to make its capabilities feel like tools you choose to use, rather than things constantly asking to be used.

We also learned from MP01

Minimal Phone 1 taught us an enormous amount.

It proved that people wanted a different relationship with technology. It showed us what worked, what people loved, and where we could improve.

E-paper was an important part of that story.

Moving to OLED isn't us saying that approach was wrong.

It’s us taking what we learned and building on it.

Our first approach leaned more heavily on hardware to shape behavior.

With Minimal Phone 2, we think the better balance is hardware and software working together.

A compact form factor creates natural boundaries.

The physical keyboard encourages communication.

Minimal OS manages attention.

Monk Mode, Focus Mode, and Unrestricted Mode put the final decision in your hands.

The happy medium

We’ve always believed there’s a space between a traditional smartphone and a device that asks you to give up everything modern phones make useful.

That’s the space we want Minimal to occupy.

A phone capable enough to be the only one you carry.

Intentional enough that you don't feel like you need to constantly use it.

Minimal Phone 2 isn't designed to tell you what your relationship with technology should look like.

It’s designed to give you better tools to choose that relationship for yourself.

Full capability. Minimal by default. Your choice when it matters.

When people hear “minimal phone,” they often assume the goal is to remove as much as possible.

No apps. No social media. No modern conveniences. No distractions of any kind.

That’s not what we’re building.

The Minimal Phone isn’t here to strip away the things you need. It’s here to give you a more intentional way to use them.

A smartphone should still be useful

There are plenty of things our phones genuinely make better.

Messaging friends and family. Maps. Music. Photos. Banking. Work. Travel. Calendars. Rideshares. The apps and services we depend on every day.

We don’t think you should have to give those things up just because you want a healthier relationship with technology.

Minimal Phone is still a smartphone.

The Play Store is there. Your apps are there. The tools you rely on are there.

We’re not deciding what you can and can’t use.

We’re designing a device that encourages you to be more conscious about how you use it.

Pick it up for a reason

The idea behind Minimal is pretty simple:

Pick it up for a reason. Do the thing. Put it down.

Send the message you wanted to send.

Check the directions.

Add the event to your calendar. Reply to the email.

Take the photo.

Then go back to whatever you were doing before you picked up your phone.

That sounds obvious, but modern smartphones aren’t always designed around that kind of relationship. There’s always another notification, another feed, another reason to keep looking.

We wanted to approach the phone differently.

Not by making it incapable.

By making it intentional.

Minimalism is about attention

For us, minimalism isn’t about owning fewer things simply for the sake of having fewer things.

It’s about being more deliberate with what you allow into your life and what deserves your attention.

Technology should work the same way.

Your phone should help when you need it, then fade into the background when you don’t.

That philosophy influences everything from the physical keyboard and compact display to Minimal OS and the way information is surfaced.

The goal isn’t to make your smartphone frustrating enough that you stop using it.

The goal is to make it easier to use with purpose.

Sitting somewhere without immediately reaching for a screen.

Minimal Phone isn’t asking you to disconnect from the world.

It’s built to help you stay connected to the parts of it that actually matter.

That’s what Minimal means to us.

Not less technology. More intention.

As Minimal continues to grow, we’ve been rebuilding some of the systems behind the scenes to make buying from us, managing your order, and getting help much easier.

Manage your order yourself

You now have much more control over your Minimal order without needing to wait for our support team.

Head to the Contact page on our website and click Manage Order.

Sign in using the same email address you used when placing your order. There’s no password to remember. We’ll simply email you a secure sign-in code.

From there, you can manage your order in one place, including:

• Change your configuration, including finish, storage, or keyboard options
• Add or adjust items on your order
• Update your shipping address and contact details
• Check your order status
• Download invoices

As long as your order has not entered the shipping process, you can make these changes directly yourself. To cancel your order, contact support using the form on our Contact page.

Our goal is simple: you shouldn’t have to open a support ticket just because you changed your mind about a color or need to update your address.

Saying goodbye to Minimal Phone 1

There’s one more important update.

We are officially ending sales and production of Minimal Phone 1.

MP01 was where this journey started. It helped us prove that there was real demand for a different kind of smartphone, one built around intentionality, communication, and a physical keyboard.

But we’re no longer manufacturing additional MP01 units.

That does not mean we’re abandoning the device or the people who bought one.

We will continue supporting Minimal Phone 1 and releasing software updates for it. Existing customers will continue to receive support from our team.

We’re simply closing the chapter on new MP01 production as we move forward with the next generation of Minimal.
